Birmingham, you’ve got a lot of soul. I wasn’t always convinced of that, I’ll admit, but I can now, with complete certainty say, that our Bham is like a kaleidoscope, not always beautiful, not always fitting everyone’s tastes but the more you look at it, the more you see and understand its complexities and appreciate its unique intricacies.
I learned my love of Birmingham about four years ago, on a night flying in from Chicago. I’d been living in that cold metropolis for about two years and I was on the fence about what I actually called home. Chicago’s lakefront, skyline, and cultural scene are world class and I thought that meant it was world class to me as well. It wasn’t until the Birmingham skyline came into view that night on the airplane that I realized that Birmingham was my “world class” because of its people, history, spirit and above all, my own memories.
Two years later, I moved back to Birmingham, and Janet and I quickly embraced the Pavo voyage to shine bright lights on the happenings that didn’t get as much coverage as they deserved. We worked countless midnights, wrote thousands of emails, met hundreds of other Birmingham enthusiasts, crossed a thousand T’s and dotted a million I’s, all to spread information, create buzz, and—in essence—shine Birmingham’s shoes. It’s a new city with a revived spirit and we did the best we could to turn the exhausted phrase “there’s nothing to do in Birmingham” into, “when are we gonna make time to do all these things in Birmingham?”
Behind every good company there’s at least one good spirit. With Pavo there are two. Our passion and creativity has been a driving force in Pavo’s success. Above success, however, is friendship, compassion and respect. It is with these sentiments that we venture now down different career paths and embrace a new future.
Along the way we’ve had some incredible moments and as my final Pavo number, I leave you with these highlights from the last few months.
Thank you for your support and your enthusiasm!
