Contracting singers, creating costumes and sets, and numerous rehearsals during the month of January has Opera Birmingham anxiously anticipating the opening night of one of the world’s most frequently performed operas.

“We particularly chose to do Aida [because] we had done it before about five years ago and it sold out; it was a huge hit and everyone loved it so we thought it was about time to bring it back,” said Meagan McCollum, Communications Assistant for Opera Birmingham.

Opera Birmingham has also seen an abundance of support from the local Birmingham community, including the Alabama Symphony Orchestra.  There are over 100 people performing on stage including the chorus from Stillman College, and a combination of students, professionals, and volunteers from the surrounding area.

The role of Aida is played by Kristin Lewis and is a native of Arkansas.  She has performed as Aida around the world and this will be her first time performing the title role in North America.

“We’re excited she’s making her North American debut in this role with us,” said McCollum.

Elias Hendricks, who plays the role of the messenger, is a Birmingham native and will also be performing in the Marriage of Figaro in March.

“We’re always happy when we can bring home natives of Alabama, especially Birmingham, who have made a good career for themselves in opera around the country,” said McCollum.

“We’ve got a lot of excitement around it and we’re expecting a great turnout for both performances.”

Performances are Friday, January 29th at 7:30pm and Sunday, January 31st at 2:30pm.

Student tickets are $12 and tickets for the general public range from $18-25. Tickets can be purchased by calling Opera Birmingham at (205) 322-6737 or online at  www.operabirmingham.org.
