Zeus fell in love with Io a beautiful mortal. When immortally jealous wife Hera learned of Zeus’ love for one of her own priestesses, Zeus turned Io into a heifer to protect her from Hera’s vengeful rage. Wise to Zeus’ tricks, Hera recognized Io, claimed the cow-maiden as her own and appointed Argus, a monster with 100 eyes, to spy on Io to ensure that Zeus did not come for her. In desperation, Zeus commissioned Hermes to rescue poor Io back to him. Hermes charmed a sleeping Argus with beautiful music on his flute, crushed him with a bolder, and finally decapitated the many-eyed monster. When Hera found her beloved guard slain, she gathered his 100 eyes and cast them onto the tail feathers of her sacred bird, the peacock, or in Latin, Pavo.
Pavo will cast as many eyes as we can onto Birmingham, bare it to you from every angle, and ask what is revealed to us about our own culture, the counterculture, as it emerges from our city’s neighborhoods and out into the country beyond. Look to Pavo for histories, mysteries, creations, trans-fixations, sanctuaries, and much, much more.
Pavo Magazine dreams to unite and nurture the diverse, beautiful community that is Birmingham. How many times have we seen Birmingham in full Renaissance only to shy from the prize just as it was being awarded? Many fledglings in our city have become birdlings and finally have flown to great heights. Some have had their wings clipped and some have flown straight into the window of an empty downtown high-rise, transfixed by their own distorted reflection.
Pavo Magazine dreams to unite and nurture the diverse, beautiful community that is Birmingham.
40 years removed from George Wallace and the violence of the civil rights era our city struggles possibly harder than ever to become an integrated, celebrated metropolis. But we see what’s out there! Birmingham’s voice is calling, strong and full, telling its story, carving its path to a brighter future. From our ever proliferating and growing art festivals and music scene to local food and farm to table movements to our literary culture to our neighborhood activism, Birmingham is filled with an energized, creative people. Pavo will strive to bring our people, their passions and projects together into one unified hub.
Look to Pavo to see what’s happening. What all these great people are out there doing! Oh, and we’ll also keep a great calendar of events to keep you busy every night of the week, out there in the community rubbing elbows with the brightest and best!
We're a small business. Other than our contributors, we are a three piece outfit. Here's how things shake down.
Janet Elizabeth Simpson
Janet is the Editor in Chief. You can submit content or questions about content to her at janet@pavomag.com. If you think you may like to write for Pavo, you can contact her about that, too. Janet's also out there in the community building relationships with non-profits, arts organizations and other cultural groups in the city, developing partnerships to help lend support to the community we write about. If you have an organization you'd like Pavo to know about, you can email her about it. She'd love to hear from you. Janet's our social media girl, too. If you tweet, she tweets back. If you facebook her, she'll be your friend forever.
Lauren Lippeatt
Lauren is the Director of Marketing, Promotions and Publicity. She keeps our name out there in the world, handling ad sales, designs and builds relationships with local businesses and the media. Lauren keeps Pavo's machine running smoothly, handling all the little things that make Pavo work. Lauren is also our Managing Editor. She's got a knack knowing for the funny people in Birmingham, like Chris Davis and Dan Carsen, for example, and she's always bringing fresh and rich content to Pavo, applying her keen eyes and ears to balance Janet's gravely serious side.
Both Janet and Lauren have their hands in the multi-media aspects of Pavo. Lauren produces and directs our podcast show, Lost in Transmission, as well as oversees video and audio content like Trib Treks and commercials. Janet's also the go-to gal for our audio and video stuff, directing our video aspects like documentary shorts and commercials, and editing our audio programs.
